The Nagasaki Kunchi Festival is the most famous festival held in Nagasaki. The festival started in the mid 1600's and is held in the fall. Although today the festival is for fun and excitement, one of the original purposes of the festival was to "check" for hidden Christians and the ban on Christianity. One of the most popular and famous performances is the "Dragon Dance" which was originally performed by Chinese that lived in the city at the time. The three day festival also includes dancing, floats shaped like river barges or Chinese boats and tons of food stalls. The three day event is very festive and exciting time to be in Nagasaki.
