When the Itsukishima Shrine was build about 800 years ago by Taira No Kiyomori (originating during the Heian period 794 - 1185 AD). Taira No Kiyomori decided that a "Kangen" festival would go great with the shrine to please the gods. This Shinto ritual transformed into a beautiful and exciting festival that lasts to this day. The festival starts in the afternoon and lasts until around midnight with a full day of festivities.
