"Kangen" (in the Festivals name, "Kangensai") is music performed with flutes, drums and Japanese string instruments that used to be played in the courts of warlords. When the Itsukishima Shrine was build about 800 years ago by Taira No Kiyomori (originating during the Heian period 794 - 1185 AD). Taira No Kiyomori decided that a "Kangen" festival would go great with the shrine to please the gods.  This Shinto ritual transformed into a beautiful and exciting festival that lasts to this day. The festival starts in the afternoon and lasts until around midnight with a full day of festivities.
