Held All Over Japan, The "Bean Throwing Festival" (in Japanese; Setsubunn, 節分祭) is the first day of spring according to the old Japanese calendar. On the day of Setsubun, the Japanese have a custom of throwing roasted soybeans (duck!) while yelling out, "In with Fortune! Out with Evil" to prevent evil creatures, Ogres, from entering one's house. The "Thrown Beans" are said to ward off the creatures... I guess not even Ogres like getting beans thrown at them. The "Bean Throwning Festival" is held all over Japan and events with entertainers and athletes are held at shrines all over the country. According to Japanese tradition, if you eat the same number of beans as your age, you will enjoy a year of good health... so... don't let anybody see how many beans you eat.
